Fate Reforged is a Magic: The Gathering expansion released on January 23, 2015. It acts as the second set in the Khans of Tarkir block and bridges the story between Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir. The set explores an earlier time on the plane of Tarkir, where dragons still terrorize the world and clans struggle for survival.
Story and Setting
In this timeline, the Planeswalker Sarkhan Vol travels far into the past to change the moment that once sealed Tarkir’s fate. His goal is to save the powerful dragon spirit Ugin and prevent dragons from ultimately dying out. As a result, the clans exist in a time when they fight against dragon threats rather than against each other. This choice rewrites history and shapes the set’s themes of fate, choice, and alternate realities.
Card Composition and Design
The set contains 185 cards that include commons, uncommons, rares, and mythic rares. Designers made sure these cards work well mechanically with both Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir for draft and limited play. Unlike typical expansions, Fate Reforged uses nonbasic lands in its basic land slot to help multicolor decks fix mana, and it keeps the wedge clan identities prominent.
Mechanics and Gameplay
Fate Reforged focuses on themes of choice and versatility through several mechanics:
-
Manifest plays cards face‑down as 2/2 creatures, later revealing them for strategic advantage.
-
Bolster enhances your weakest creature by adding +1/+1 counters, promoting growth and resilience.
-
Dash lets creatures rush into battle with haste and then return to your hand.
-
Prowess, Delve, and Ferocious return from the previous set, offering powerful triggers and strategic depth.
These mechanics encourage players to balance risk and reward and to build flexible decks that adapt to shifting battlefield conditions.
Strategic Play
The set rewards players who think ahead and make tactical decisions in every phase of play. Modal spells and choices force players to evaluate short‑term benefits versus long‑term power. Meanwhile, dragon broods and clan synergies give players meaningful themes to explore and build around.
Legacy and Influence
Although Fate Reforged has rotated out of Standard, many of its cards remain popular in formats like Modern and Commander. The set’s emphasis on choice, hybrid mana, and powerful mechanics gives it enduring appeal for players who enjoy rich stories and deep gameplay.
