Final Fantasy VII is a role-playing game developed and published by Square. The game was released in Japan for PlayStation on January 31, 1997.

It is the seventh main entry in the Final Fantasy series and the first title in the franchise to use 3D character models with pre-rendered backgrounds and full motion video.

The game introduced a darker science-fiction setting and cinematic storytelling while keeping the classic turn-based RPG structure of the series.

Story

The story follows Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER member who works as a mercenary.

Cloud joins AVALANCHE, an eco-terrorist group fighting the powerful Shinra Electric Power Company. Shinra extracts Mako, the planet’s life energy, as a power source for its cities.

During their mission, Cloud and his allies learn about the return of Sephiroth, a legendary warrior with a mysterious past. As a result, the group travels across the world to stop a threat that could destroy the planet.

Along the journey, Cloud meets several companions including Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough, and Barret Wallace, each with their own connection to the conflict.

Gameplay

Final Fantasy VII uses turn-based RPG combat based on the Active Time Battle system.

Characters act when their action gauges fill, allowing players to attack, cast spells, or use items. Players form a party of three characters chosen from a larger group of allies.

The game introduces the Materia system, which allows players to equip magical abilities and special skills. Materia can grant spells, summon creatures, or improve character attributes.

Players explore towns, dungeons, and a world map while completing story events and optional activities.

Modes and Features

The PS1 version includes a full single-player campaign across three discs.

Players can discover numerous side activities during the adventure, including mini-games, secret bosses, and hidden items. Vehicles such as airships also allow exploration of new locations on the world map.

These features add significant replay value and expand the game world.

Presentation

Final Fantasy VII combines polygonal characters with detailed pre-rendered backgrounds.

The game also features cinematic full motion video cutscenes, which were highly advanced for its time.

The soundtrack was composed by Nobuo Uematsu and includes many themes that later became iconic in the series.

Legacy

Final Fantasy VII became one of the most influential RPGs in gaming history.

The game achieved massive commercial success and helped popularize Japanese RPGs worldwide. It also contributed significantly to the growth of the PlayStation platform.

Its success later led to multiple spin-offs, films, and modern remake projects.
