Final Fantasy is a role-playing game developed and published by Square. The PlayStation version was released in Japan on October 31, 2002 as part of the compilation Final Fantasy I・II.

This version is a remake of the original 1987 game. In addition, it introduces updated graphics, improved sound, and gameplay adjustments while preserving the original structure.

Story

The story follows four young heroes known as the Warriors of Light. Each of them carries a crystal that once maintained balance in the world.

However, the crystals lose their power after the appearance of four elemental fiends. As a result, darkness spreads across the land.

The Warriors of Light begin a journey to defeat these fiends. During their adventure, they explore kingdoms, dungeons, and ancient ruins in order to restore the crystals.

Gameplay

Final Fantasy uses a turn-based battle system typical of early Japanese role-playing games.

At the beginning of the game, players create a party of four characters. Then they choose different character classes such as Fighter, Thief, White Mage, or Black Mage.

Players travel across an overworld that connects towns, caves, and castles. During exploration, random encounters trigger battles against monsters.

As a result, characters gain experience points, increase their levels, and become stronger. Later in the story, characters can upgrade their classes and unlock stronger abilities.

Modes

The PlayStation version focuses on a single-player adventure.

Players explore a large world map and progress through towns, dungeons, and story events. In addition, the remake includes improved menus and gameplay balance compared to the original release.

The compilation also allows players to access Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II from the same game collection.

Presentation

The PlayStation remake features improved character sprites and updated visual effects.

In addition, the soundtrack includes rearranged versions of the original compositions by Nobuo Uematsu. These updates modernize the presentation while maintaining the classic fantasy atmosphere.

Legacy

Final Fantasy introduced many mechanics that later defined the Final Fantasy series.

Its success helped establish Square as a major RPG developer. As a result, the game remains one of the most influential titles in the history of Japanese role-playing games.
