Kamaitachi no Yoru is a Japanese visual novel video game developed and published by Chunsoft. The game was first released for the Super Famicom on November 25, 1994. It belongs to the “sound novel” genre, a style of interactive storytelling that combines written narrative, sound effects, and atmospheric music. The title later received ports on platforms such as PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, PC, and mobile devices.

The game became one of the most influential titles in the early visual novel genre. In fact, it was the second “sound novel” created by Chunsoft, and its success encouraged other developers to produce similar narrative-driven games. Over time, the genre evolved into what many players now recognize as modern visual novels.

Story and Setting

The story follows a university student named Tōru and his girlfriend Mari. During a winter vacation, they travel to a ski lodge in the mountains. However, a severe snowstorm traps the guests inside the building. Soon after their arrival, someone discovers a mysterious message that warns that a murder will occur at midnight.

Not long after the message appears, one of the lodge guests is killed. As the characters remain isolated from the outside world, suspicion spreads among the group. Players must follow clues and make decisions while the mystery unfolds. If the player fails to identify the correct clues or suspects, additional murders may occur during the story.

Gameplay and Multiple Endings

Kamaitachi no Yoru focuses on reading narrative text and selecting choices that affect the direction of the story. Instead of traditional action gameplay, the experience resembles an interactive novel. The player progresses by choosing dialogue options and investigation paths.

Because of these branching decisions, the story contains multiple endings. Different choices reveal alternative events, hidden routes, and additional storylines. Players must explore several paths in order to discover every ending and unlock extra scenarios.

A Classic Japanese Mystery Game

Kamaitachi no Yoru became a major success in Japan and sold over a million copies across its various versions and ports. The game later inspired sequels and influenced other story-driven titles in the visual novel genre.

Today, the game remains an important part of Japanese gaming history and is often considered one of the defining works of the early visual novel era.
