Kuon is a 2004 survival horror game developed and published by FromSoftware for PlayStation 2 in Japan on April 1, 2004. It blends traditional horror elements with Japanese folklore and a haunting atmosphere that sets it apart from typical horror games.

Story & Setting

The game takes place during Japan’s Heian period on the eerie grounds of Fujiwara Manor in Kyoto. You control three protagonists — Utsuki, her friend Sakuya, and the veteran onmyōji Abe no Seimei — each with their own campaign and perspective on the manor’s curse. Players explore the manor’s dark halls and nearby shrines, unveiling ritualistic mysteries and confronting the supernatural.

Gameplay & Mechanics

Kuon uses a third‑person fixed camera perspective common in classic survival horror. You navigate slowly, which increases tension and forces you to think before acting. Players must solve puzzles, collect key items, and manage scarce resources to survive. Battles occur in real time against undead spirits and grotesque creatures. In addition to physical attacks with weapons, characters can cast magic spells or summon creatures like wolves and spiders to assist in combat.

Each character’s campaign reveals different parts of the story. Completing the first two campaigns unlocks a final chapter focused on Abe no Seimei that ties all plot threads together. This structure encourages replay and deepens narrative engagement.

Atmosphere & Legacy

Kuon stands out for its authentic Japanese horror style, drawing on kaidan, traditional ghost story elements. The game uses atmospheric environments, unsettling audio cues, and mythic themes to create dread and immersion. Although critics offered mixed reviews — praising its mood but criticizing its pacing and controls — it became a cult horror title among fans of Japanese survival games.
