Puyo Puyo Tsuu Ketteiban
¥1,500
Puyo Puyo Tsuu Ketteiban is a puzzle game developed and published by Compile. The PlayStation version was released in Japan on November 15, 1996. It is a port of Puyo Puyo Tsuu, the second main entry in the Puyo Puyo series, originally released in arcades in 1994.
In addition, this PlayStation release is based largely on the Sega Saturn version and includes additional gameplay modes and presentation changes.
Story
The game follows the adventures of Arle Nadja and several characters from the Madou Monogatari universe.
Characters compete in puzzle battles using magical creatures called Puyos. During these battles, players attempt to defeat opponents by creating large chain reactions.
As a result, each victory advances the player through a sequence of character encounters and puzzle challenges.
Gameplay
Puyo Puyo Tsuu Ketteiban is a falling-block puzzle game.
Colored Puyos fall from the top of the screen in pairs. Players rotate and position the pieces to connect four or more Puyos of the same color.
When connected groups disappear, additional Puyos above them fall and may create chain reactions. Therefore, building large combos becomes the key strategy during battles.
Successful chains send garbage Puyos to the opponent’s field, making it harder for them to continue playing.
Modes
The PlayStation version includes several gameplay modes.
Story Mode features puzzle battles against different characters from the series. Each opponent presents unique challenges and difficulty levels.
In addition, the game includes practice modes and the Tokoton Puyo Puyo mode, which focuses on achieving high scores and long chain reactions.
The game also supports multiplayer matches where two players compete directly against each other.
Presentation
Puyo Puyo Tsuu Ketteiban uses colorful graphics and animated character portraits typical of the Puyo Puyo series.
Characters speak during matches and react to events on the puzzle field. In addition, the PlayStation version includes updated voice recordings and dialogue changes compared to earlier releases.
Legacy
Puyo Puyo Tsuu became one of the most influential titles in the Puyo Puyo franchise.
Its refined puzzle mechanics helped define the competitive style of the series. As a result, many later entries continued using the gameplay systems introduced in this installment.
