Ridge Racer

¥2,500

Ridge Racer is an arcade-style racing game developed and published by Namco. The PlayStation version released in Japan in December 1994 and later launched in North America and Europe in 1995 as one of the early titles for the console. The game originally appeared in arcades in 1993 before receiving this home console adaptation.

Arcade Racing and Gameplay

Ridge Racer focuses on fast, accessible racing rather than realistic driving simulation. Players compete against rival cars on closed circuits while trying to finish laps within a time limit. Checkpoints extend the timer and allow the race to continue.

The gameplay emphasizes speed and drifting through corners. Mastering controlled slides helps players maintain momentum on tight curves. As a result, the racing feels fast and fluid compared with many driving games of the time.

PlayStation Version Features

The PlayStation version recreates the arcade experience with polygonal 3D graphics and high-speed racing. Because of the hardware differences, the console version runs at a lower resolution and frame rate than the arcade version. However, it still delivers a strong technical showcase for the early PlayStation hardware.

While the game loads from CD, players can control a small Galaxian mini-game during the loading screen. This feature hides loading times and became one of the most memorable details of the PlayStation release.

A Classic PlayStation Racer

Ridge Racer helped demonstrate the potential of 3D graphics on Sony’s console. Its smooth arcade gameplay, electronic soundtrack, and futuristic track design made it one of the most recognizable racing games of the early PlayStation era.

The game also started the long-running Ridge Racer series, which later expanded with sequels and spin-offs across many platforms.
