Super Mario 64 is a platform action game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The game launched in Japan on June 23, 1996, the same day the Nintendo 64 console released in the country. It became the first fully 3D game in the Super Mario series, introducing a new style of gameplay that allowed players to explore open environments freely.

Nintendo’s development team, led by Shigeru Miyamoto, created the game after experimenting with 3D gameplay concepts during earlier projects. Development lasted nearly three years, with significant work dedicated to building a virtual camera system and designing Mario’s movement in a three-dimensional space.

Story and Exploration

The adventure begins when Mario receives a letter from Princess Peach inviting him to her castle. However, when he arrives, Bowser has already invaded the castle, kidnapped Peach, and hidden the magical Power Stars that protect the castle across different worlds.

To rescue the princess, Mario must explore Princess Peach’s Castle and jump into magical paintings that act as portals to various levels. Each world contains multiple missions and objectives. Players collect Power Stars by completing challenges such as defeating enemies, solving puzzles, reaching hidden areas, or collecting special items.

As Mario gathers more stars, new areas of the castle unlock. Eventually, players can confront Bowser in several boss battles and complete the adventure.

Innovative Gameplay and Controls

Super Mario 64 introduced several mechanics that became standard in later 3D games. The game allows players to move freely in a 3D environment, perform advanced jumps, swim, climb, and interact with objects in the world.

Another important innovation is the dynamic camera system, which lets players adjust the camera angle to better view the environment while exploring levels. At the time, this feature represented a major technical achievement in 3D game design.

A Landmark Nintendo 64 Game

Super Mario 64 had a huge impact on the video game industry. Its open-ended level design, precise controls, and 3D camera system helped establish the foundation for many future 3D platform games.

The game sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling titles on the Nintendo 64. Today, the Japanese version remains an important and collectible release for retro gaming fans and Nintendo collectors.
