Super Mario USA

Super Mario USA is a platform video game released in Japan for the Famicom on September 14, 1992. Nintendo developed and published the game as a cartridge release of what Western players know as Super Mario Bros. 2.

Interestingly, the game’s origins are unusual within the Mario series. The gameplay actually comes from a 1987 Famicom Disk System title called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. Nintendo later modified that game by replacing its characters with Mario and his friends. The result became Super Mario Bros. 2 in North America and Europe. Years later, Nintendo released that version in Japan under the name Super Mario USA.

Story and Setting

The game follows Mario and his friends as they enter a dream world ruled by the villain Wart. To defeat him, players travel through several themed worlds filled with enemies, traps, and platform challenges. The story remains simple and serves mainly as a framework for the platforming adventure.

Gameplay

Super Mario USA differs from traditional Mario platform games in several ways. Instead of defeating enemies by jumping on them, players often pick up objects or enemies and throw them. Vegetables pulled from the ground also serve as weapons.

Players can choose between four characters: Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach. Each character has unique abilities that affect gameplay. For example, Luigi jumps higher, Toad runs faster, and Peach can float briefly in the air.

Levels include vertical climbing sections, underground areas, and boss battles at the end of each world. These mechanics made the game feel very different from other Mario titles of the time.

A Unique Mario Release in Japan

Super Mario USA stands out in the Mario series because of its unusual development history. While Western players originally knew it as Super Mario Bros. 2, Japanese players received it years later under the “USA” title. Today, the Famicom cartridge remains a collectible retro game among Mario fans and classic Nintendo collectors.
