Super Smash Bros., titled Nintendo All-Star! Great Fray Smash Brothers in Japan, is a fighting game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The game released in Japan on January 21, 1999 and became the first entry in the Super Smash Bros. series.
The concept of the game differs from traditional fighting games. Instead of reducing an opponent’s health bar, players must launch rivals off the stage. Characters accumulate damage percentages when they take hits. As the percentage increases, attacks push the character farther away, which makes it easier to knock them out of the arena.
Nintendo Characters in a Crossover Battle
Super Smash Bros. brings together characters from many Nintendo franchises. The initial roster includes well-known characters such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu. In addition, players can unlock four extra fighters during the game: Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ness, and Jigglypuff.
Each character features unique attacks and abilities inspired by their original series. Stages also reference different Nintendo games, which adds variety to each battle.
Gameplay Modes and Multiplayer Battles
The game includes a single-player mode, where players fight a series of computer-controlled opponents. Completing the mode unlocks additional characters and challenges.
However, multiplayer battles are the main attraction. Up to four players can compete simultaneously, which takes advantage of the four controller ports of the Nintendo 64. Players can customize the match rules, including timed battles or stock matches with a limited number of lives.
During matches, various items appear on the stage. These include weapons and power-ups from different Nintendo games. One example is the Poké Ball, which summons Pokémon to attack opponents.
A Landmark Nintendo Fighting Game
Super Smash Bros. received positive reviews after its release and became a commercial success. The game sold more than five million copies worldwide and helped establish one of Nintendo’s most successful crossover franchises.
Today, the Japanese Nintendo 64 version remains an important and collectible title. It introduced the gameplay style and character crossover concept that later entries in the Super Smash Bros. series expanded.
