Tekken 2
Price range: ¥800 through ¥2,000
Tekken 2 is a 3D fighting game developed and published by Namco. The PlayStation version was released in Japan on March 29, 1996.
It is the second entry in the Tekken series and expands the gameplay and roster of the original game. The PlayStation version adds several exclusive modes and cinematic endings for every character.
The game became one of the most successful fighting titles on the original PlayStation and helped establish the series as a major franchise.
Story
The story takes place two years after the first King of Iron Fist Tournament.
Kazuya Mishima defeated his father Heihachi and took control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. However, his rule quickly becomes associated with corruption and violent activities.
To strengthen his power, Kazuya organizes a second King of Iron Fist Tournament. Fighters from around the world enter the competition to challenge him.
During the tournament, Heihachi unexpectedly returns, seeking revenge against his son and the chance to reclaim control of the Mishima Zaibatsu.
Gameplay
Tekken 2 uses a 3D fighting system where each button controls a specific limb.
Players use four primary buttons: left punch, right punch, left kick, and right kick. This system allows characters to perform combinations, throws, and counters during combat.
The game features 25 playable fighters, including returning characters and new additions such as Jun Kazama and Lei Wulong.
Each character has a unique fighting style, special moves, and combos that players can learn and master during battles.
Modes and Features
The PlayStation version introduces several modes not present in the arcade release.
These modes include:
-
Arcade Mode
-
Versus Mode
-
Survival Mode
-
Time Attack Mode
-
Team Battle
-
Practice Mode
In addition, every character features a CG ending movie that plays after completing the arcade mode.
These additions significantly expand the home console experience compared to the arcade version.
Presentation
Tekken 2 features 3D character models fighting on arenas with 2D background environments.
The PlayStation version includes arranged music and improved cinematic sequences. Character animations and lighting effects were also praised at the time of release.
The game’s soundtrack and visual style helped define the atmosphere of early 3D fighting games.
Legacy
Tekken 2 became both a critical and commercial success.
Its expanded roster, deeper mechanics, and additional modes helped the series gain popularity on consoles. The game laid the foundation for later titles such as Tekken 3, which further evolved the franchise.
