Tekken Tag Tournament is a 3D fighting game released for PlayStation 2 in Japan on March 30, 2000. Developed by Namco, it expands the Tekken formula with a tag-based battle system that allows players to control teams of fighters instead of a single character.

Gameplay & Tag System

The main feature of Tekken Tag Tournament is its two-on-two tag battle system. Players select two fighters and switch between them during combat to create powerful tag combos and coordinated attacks. This mechanic adds strategy, since characters can recover health while off the battlefield and return later to continue the fight.

The game includes fast-paced 3D combat with punches, kicks, throws, and special moves. Timing, movement, and counterattacks remain essential to victory. Because of the tag system, players must also think about team synergy and how different fighters complement each other.

Characters & Content

Tekken Tag Tournament features one of the largest rosters in the series at the time, including fighters from earlier Tekken titles such as Jin Kazama, Kazuya Mishima, Nina Williams, King, Yoshimitsu, and many others. In total, the game includes dozens of characters, bringing together fighters from different points in the series for a dream-style competition.

In addition to traditional fighting modes, the PS2 version also includes extra content like Tekken Bowl, a humorous mini-game where characters compete in bowling matches using their unique abilities.

Presentation & PS2 Features

The PlayStation 2 release improved the visuals compared to the arcade version, featuring more detailed character models and animated environments. The Japanese version includes menus and text in Japanese, preserving the original domestic release.
