Virtua Fighter Remix is a 3D fighting game developed by Sega AM1 and published by Sega. The Sega Saturn version was released in Japan on July 14, 1995.

The game is an updated version of the original Virtua Fighter. It was created to improve the early Saturn port by introducing new character models and visual enhancements while keeping the same core gameplay.

This version became the definitive edition of the first Virtua Fighter on the console before the release of Virtua Fighter 2.

Story

Virtua Fighter Remix centers on a martial arts tournament where fighters from around the world compete to prove their strength.

Each character enters the competition with personal motivations. Some seek honor and mastery of martial arts, while others pursue revenge or fame.

As the tournament progresses, competitors face increasingly powerful opponents. Ultimately, the strongest fighters challenge the mysterious boss Dural.

Gameplay

Virtua Fighter Remix uses a 3D fighting system focused on realistic martial arts techniques.

Players control fighters using three main buttons: punch, kick, and guard. By combining these inputs with directional commands, players perform throws, counters, and combos.

Each character represents a different fighting style inspired by real martial arts disciplines. Therefore, mastering timing, positioning, and defense becomes essential during matches.

The gameplay remains largely identical to the original Virtua Fighter, but the Remix version improves the visual presentation of the fighters.

Modes and Features

The Sega Saturn version includes several modes for single-player and multiplayer gameplay:

  • Arcade Mode

  • Versus Mode

  • Ranking Mode

  • Training and practice options

The roster features eight playable fighters, including Akira, Pai, Lau, Wolf, Jeffry, Kage, Sarah, and Jacky, along with the boss character Dural.

Hidden features and unlockable options are also included, such as the ability to play as Dural and special ranking challenges.

Presentation

Virtua Fighter Remix improves the visual quality of the original Saturn release.

The game introduces texture-mapped character models and redesigned portraits, giving fighters a more detailed appearance compared to the flat-shaded models of the earlier version.

While backgrounds remain mostly unchanged, the improved models and animations make battles appear smoother and more polished.

Legacy

Virtua Fighter Remix served as an important revision of the original Virtua Fighter on Sega Saturn.

By improving the graphics and presentation, the game addressed criticism of the first Saturn port. As a result, it helped maintain the popularity of the Virtua Fighter series on home consoles until Virtua Fighter 2 arrived.
