Coldsnap is a unique Magic: The Gathering expansion released on July 21, 2006. It concludes the Ice Age block, arriving a decade after Ice Age and Alliances. The designers made it feel like a natural continuation of the block. The set contains 155 black‑bordered cards, including rares, uncommons, and commons. Its symbol of three icicles highlights the frozen theme throughout the set. The designers revived classic Ice Age mechanics such as cumulative upkeep, pitch cards, and snow-related effects. They also added new keywords like Recover and Ripple to create fresh gameplay possibilities.
The set focuses on snow and cold. Snow becomes a supertype that affects all kinds of permanents, creating synergies with snow-related cards. Recover lets players bring cards back from the graveyard. Ripple encourages careful spell sequencing by creating additional copies of certain spells.
Coldsnap carries a retro design approach. The team designed it as a “lost” part of Ice Age. They blended old themes with new mechanics to create a nostalgic but modern experience. The design cycle lasted only six weeks, which forced the team to focus sharply on core ideas. Commons in the set reward players who use multiple copies, making sealed and draft formats more engaging.
Even today, players still use some Coldsnap cards in formats like Modern, Legacy, and Vintage. Many cards retain unique effects or practical value. The set works both as a tribute to the Ice Age era and as an experiment in mixing older design ideas with newer ones.
