Amonkhet is the 74th expansion set in Magic: The Gathering and the first release in the Amonkhet block. It launched on April 28, 2017, and introduces a desert plane heavily inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology, monumental architecture, and divine trials.

Setting and Story

The plane of Amonkhet appears to be a world devoted to order, discipline, and devotion to its gods. Its society revolves around a series of deadly trials designed to prepare the worthy for a promised afterlife. However, the story reveals that the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas secretly controls the plane and manipulates its fate.

When the Gatewatch arrives, they discover that Amonkhet’s apparent paradise hides a far darker purpose. The clash between the heroes and Nicol Bolas becomes one of the defining moments of the storyline.

Mechanics

Amonkhet introduces several mechanics that shape gameplay and reflect its themes:

Embalm allows players to exile a creature card from their graveyard to create a white Zombie token copy of it.

Exert gives attacking creatures additional power or abilities, but they do not untap during the next untap step.

Aftermath appears on split cards and allows players to cast the second half of the card from the graveyard.

Cycling, a returning mechanic, lets players discard a card to draw another.

These mechanics emphasize endurance, the importance of the graveyard, and calculated aggression.
