Pokémon Red
Price range: ¥1,200 through ¥4,500
Pokémon Red (Japanese: Pocket Monsters Red) is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. It released in Japan on February 27, 1996, alongside Pocket Monsters Green. The game introduced the core mechanics that later defined the Pokémon franchise.
Story and Setting
The adventure begins in Pallet Town, where the player starts their journey as a Pokémon Trainer. After meeting Professor Oak, the protagonist receives their first Pokémon and begins exploring the Kanto region.
The main goal is to defeat eight Gym Leaders and collect their badges. Afterward, the player challenges the Pokémon League to become the Champion. During the journey, the player must also confront Team Rocket, a criminal organization that steals and exploits Pokémon.
Gameplay
The game combines exploration, creature collection, and turn-based battles. Players travel across towns, routes, caves, and forests while encountering wild Pokémon. To capture them, trainers weaken the creature and throw a Poké Ball.
Pokémon gain experience after battles and level up or evolve into stronger forms. The original Pokédex includes 151 Pokémon, and players must trade with another version using the Game Boy Link Cable to complete the full collection.
Legacy
Pokémon Red became one of the most influential handheld RPGs of the 1990s. Its mechanics created the foundation for a global franchise that later expanded into sequels, anime, manga, and merchandise.
